First Flight

Placing the disc in the air - After your dog has learned to go after the disc and return it to you, your next step should be basic short throws and catches. Keep the distance short at first (no more than 4- 6 feet), this will help your dog to track (or follow), the disc and make the catch. After they have their “eye - to - mouth” coordination down, you can gradually begin to increase the distance of your throws, making sure your dog returns the disc to you for another throw.

You will notice that as your dog becomes more practiced at running after and catching the disc, they will start to leap after it. A good, steady throw will make it much easier for your dog to catch the disc. With some practice on your throwing technique, you will be able to make consistent throws that will be easy for your dog to catch. The main point of playing toss and catch with your dog is to make it a fun and enjoyable experience, and it’s great exercise for both pet and owner!

You may even decide to try your luck at local canine flying disc competitions. It’s great fun, and a great way to have fun with your dog and meet people with similar interests (like our club and its members, for example).

We hope these basic tips will help you get started on your way to having a fun filled day wherever you and your dog may roam!
