We had a beatiful day with weather in the 70's and a slight breeze that kept switching directions for the "Catch For The Cure" Fundraiser / Toss and Fetch Competition. We had a great turnout with 40 teams competing and had quite a few spectators cheering all of us on throughout the day. We raised a total of $485 in donations which will be split amongst the following benefitting organizations: The Greater Tampa Bay Chapter of The American Cancer Society, Australian Shepherd Rescue, and Southeast Border Collie Rescue. Since 2000, this memorial fundraiser / competition has been held in memory of several past club members who have passed away due to cancer and in memory of all dogs who have been rescued and given a better life by our club. This was a near perfect day for disc dogging and the scores in both divisions showed it. We had several new teams join us who seemed to catch on quickly and look to be a threat at future competitions. We also had several familiar faces from the disc dog scene who were putting up some great rounds of toss and fetch. I would like to once again thank Pasco County Parks and Recreation Department and the Land O Lakes Recreation Complex for allowing us to bring our dogs into their facility and giving folks an opportunity to see what disc doggin is all about. I would also like to thank Jan and Mary from Australian Shepherd Rescue who came out to share information on dog rescue and several dogs available for adoption.
We are a competitive, yet laid back group who enjoys having fun with our pets first and foremost, but also showing others how much fun they can have with theirs also! At the end of the competition, we had a few freestyle demonstrations for folks to get a look at some of the high flying action they might see at an upcoming competition. Gary Duke and Bayer showed off some new freestyle moves gearing up for the upcoming season, followed by Bob and Colleen Hegyi with Haze showing a preview of their Pairs Freestyle routine, and finally a tribute routine for Chuck Hensley and Rico in memory of Rascal to a freestyle song of Rascal's. Rascal, a great border collie rescued from Southeast Border Collie Rescue by the Hensleys, who was very successful in the disc dog world and just recently crossed the rainbow bridge and is waiting for another toss.
Thanks to everyone who came out for such a great cause and a wonderful day! Congratulations to the Novice Division winning team of Ed and Scout and to the Advanced Division winning team of Chuck and Rico, both teams seemed to rise to the occassion and schooled their opponents. Our top three teams from each division took home a commemorative "Catch For The Cure" disc.
